Overview

Nairobi is the capital and largest city of Kenya. The name comes from a Maasai phrase “Enkare Nyorobi” which means “place of cool waters,” due to the Nairobi River which flows through the city.

The city was founded in 1899 by the colonial authorities, British East Africa, as a rail depot on the Kenya-Uganda railway. Back then the land was just bare, open, plain and swampy. The engineer in charge decided to construct a base for the railway workers before tackling the Rift Valley Escarpment. The town quickly grew to replace Mombasa in 1907 and after independence in 1963, Nairobi became the capital of the Republic of Kenya.

Nairobi is a fascinating city with skyscrapers and urban sprawl co-existing with a national park. It serves as the regional headquarters of many multinational and international organizations, such as the UN agencies. The city is popularly known as the Green City in the Sun, steeped in its rich culture, heritage and history.
