Overview

Rwanda’s capital city stretches across undulating lush hills surrounded by towering mountains, the largest of which is Mount Kigali, rising 1,850 metres above sea level.

Kigali is the country’s financial, commercial and cultural hub, served by an international airport. It features a wide range of accommodation options, restaurants and points of interest, including the Kigali Genocide Centre.

With its interesting architecture, busy streets, meandering boulevards, and green hillsides, Kigali is one of the most attractive cities in Africa and is definitely worth a visit.

After breakfast, freshen up and check-out. Proceed to the Genocide Memorial Centre. Inaugurated in 2004, the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi is the final resting place for more than 250,000 victims. It also serves to educate people about how the genocide took place against the Tutsi.

Thereafter, head for Volcanoes National Park, a sanctuary for the rare mountain gorillas. The park is set high on the jungle-covered slopes of the Volcanic Virunga Mountains.

Upon arrival at the lodge, check-in and have lunch. Spend the rest of the afternoon enjoying the hotel facilities.

Day 3: Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, prepare for the trek. Have a short briefing from the RDB staff. Ensure to carry a rain jacket, drinking water, snacks and jungle boots.

Gorilla trekking is a unique opportunity to discover the 10 gorilla families. You can also enjoy a cup of coffee before the trek and later be separated into groups of 8, depending on physical abilities. Each group has a guide and two scouts, who are well trained in emergency situations. The amount of time set aside per trek is different depending on where the gorilla family is situated.

Return to the lodge for lunch. Spend some time by the pool and later enjoy a cultural visit to the Iby’ Iwacu village to learn about their traditions and beliefs. Head back to the lodge in the evening. Freshen up and relax.

Dinner & Overnight at the Lodge.

Day 4: Volcanoes National Park

Begin the day with breakfast and proceed to the park headquarters for the golden monkey trekking briefing. These striking primates have bright orange fur, contrasting the green rainforests of the Virunga Mountains.

The golden monkeys can be found in very few places outside Volcanoes National Park and their vibrant colours, energetic demeanour, and sizeable troupes of up to 30 individuals are indeed a sight to behold.

Afterwards, return to the lodge and have lunch. Freshen up and enjoy the hotel facilities.
