Overview

Zanzibar is a perfect slice of Indian Ocean heaven. Soft sand, white beaches and shimmering waters have earned the island its well-deserved reputation as a breathtaking place to escape from the world.

It consists of many small islands and two large ones: Unguja, the main island, and Pemba. The capital is Zanzibar, located on the island of Unguja. The historic centre, Stone Town, is a World Heritage Site, primarily because of its rich culture.

The town, which was once a flourishing trade hub filled with Arab and European settlers, was also the largest slave port in the region. It is estimated that around 600,000 slaves were sold through Zanzibar between 1830 and 1863.

Zanzibar's main industries are spices, raffia and tourism. The islands produce cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and black pepper. For this reason, the Zanzibar archipelago, together with Tanzania’s Mafia Island, is locally referred to as the Spice Islands.

But Zanzibar is so much more than romantic coastlines and beautiful sunsets. It is an island rich in culture, with diverse wildlife and plenty to see and do.
